Our History of Growth
 
The biomedical autism segment of our practice was originally founded by Dr. Noah Erickson in 2012 as Dr. Noah’s ARC - Autism Recovery Center. Since then, we have seen thousands of patients nationwide, and have added additional services and locations, and therefore have made the decision to rebrand to reflect our larger mission and broader scope of services. Now, as Enliven Functional Medicine, nothing has changed except the name - same great service, same mission, same values, same physician.
Most recently, with the addition of Dr. Anthony Kovatch, MD as our medical director, we have been able to grow and expand our treatments by offering the addition of medical services such as prescribing certain medications such as Methyl B-12 therapy and other beneficial, more benign complementary medications.

Your genes are the blueprint of your body’s metabolic factory, and how these genes are expressed greatly influences your health. It’s often said that genetics loads the gun, but the environment pulls the trigger.
 
Your genes are controlled or “turned on” and “turned off” by a cycle in your cells known as methylation. Think of this process as the editing software of your computer which corrects your improper spelling on a document.
The Science of Epigenetics

Methyl B12 Injections for Autism Spectrum Disorder
 
B12 (cobalamin) is a group of vitamins with five unique members that each do different things. The members are a.) cyanocobalamin; b) hydroxycobalamin; c) adenosylcobalamin; d) glutathionylcobalamin; e) methylcobalamin. Out of the entire B12 family, only Methyl-B12 has the ability to activate the methionine/homocysteine biochemical pathway directly. It is this pathway that is responsible for the body’s entire sulfur-based detoxification system. Glutathione is the body’s primary intracellular antioxidant and is responsible for many detoxification reactions, most notably those that involve the binding and removal of mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, nickel, tin, antimony, and many other lesser-known heavy metals that also bind to glutathione’s sulfur group.
 
Methyl-B12 is closely allied with the folic acid biochemical pathway. A precursor folic acid molecule must interact with the enzyme MTHFR to become 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid, the molecule that donates its methyl group to B12 so it can become Methyl-B12. Unfortunately, many children have a defect in this enzyme.
The majority of children have been found to respond positively to injectable Methyl-B12 therapy. Executive function is improved in the majority of children in things like awareness, cognition, appropriateness, and eye contact when called. Speech and language is improved in the majority of children in all phases of language including spontaneous language, more complex sentences, increased vocabulary, etc. Socialization and emotion is improved in the majority of the children with initiation and interactive play, understanding and feeling emotions, possibly for the first time, or to a more normal degree.
